The History of Credit Cards
History of credit cards actually goes back to the 19th century when shopkeepers and traders started giving the option of credit to regular buyers whom they were confident would repay them back. This was then taken over by the Coal mining companies who would give prepaid credit for its employees so that the mining can still continue till the coal is completely mined out and the value is estimated. It is so strange to know that the aspects of credit risk, credit management, types of credit were all found years back but just were known using different words and terms.
Company stores were formed by the owners of many coal mining companies and offered credit to only its employees. Any product that could be necessary was available in these stores. Credit coins were given by these owners forcing those employees to buy only from their stores.
The mine owners usually had a good credit track and the credit management was well done by them. This would enable the creditors to feel a lesser credit risk and would give enough supplies to these owners. The type of credit that the miners got was more or less an advance payment for the job and was given in the form of scripts from the companies. The only disadvantage for the miners was that they would end up paying almost 3 times the price if they purchased outside of the company shops. This concept developed into what is called prepaid credit where it is equivalent to raw cash and no additional charges apply.
The following might be useful for some who are looking to get a prepaid or a secured credit card:
Fees
You should take the initiative from your end to find out what are the fees and if they are monthly, yearly and if they have any other extra fees or so on. Some even attract transaction fees and charges while you debit the money. The fees also vary based on the type of credit.
Protection
The vital difference between a prepaid and credit is the fact that prepaid is more or less like a debit card where you initially have the money and credit where you really get to pay the money on credit. There are different rules and regulations depending on the type of credit that you have. If it is a credit card then you options to raise it as an incorrect charge while you don't have that as option in prepaid cards as the amount is already paid. Aspects of credit management also include methods of spending repaying and protecting as well.
Credit history
Slow and steady is always the secret behind building a good and clean credit history. Ensure that you pay your bills on time and without dues, penalties or balance. This of course differs between the different types of credit cards but find out if they do submit their reports to credit bureaus as it can only then be useful to improve credit history.
